You will need:

4 Granny Smith apples
4 cups boiling water
1 (11 oz.) bag wrapped caramels
2 TB milk
4 wooden caramel apple sticks
Butter
Wax Paper
(red fondant heart and sprinkles optional)
First, remove the stems from the apples.
Directions for State Fair Caramel Apples:
Place 1 apple in the boiling water for 10 seconds. Remove and rub dry vigorously. (This step is critical for removing wax which will allow the caramel to stick. It’s important to do this one at a time and not put all the apples in the boiling water together).
Remove wrappers from all of the caramels and place in a microwavable bowl.
Add 2 TB milk to the bowl and microwave on high for 1 minute.
Remove bowl from microwave and stir. Place bowl back in microwave and heat for another minute. Remove and stir.
If necessary heat in 15 second increments until smooth.
Place wax paper on a cookie sheet and coat with butter.
Push a stick in the top of each apple.
Dip apple in melted caramel mixture and let excess drip off.
Place the bottom of the apple immediately into a bowl of sprinkles or crushed nuts if desired.
Place apple on wax paper to set.

Now you have the perfect caramel apple! You can add sprinkles and a cute fondant heart if desired. Instead of sprinkles, try adding:
- coconut
- chopped nuts
- mini chocolate chips
- mini marshmallows
- mini M&M’s
- crushed cookies
