These Copycat Kmart Submarine Sandwiches taste just like the original! Takes me back to when I was a little kid and my mom and dad would treat us to one of these sandwiches. I remember when Kmart had a deli and when you walked in the store you smelled fresh popcorn and saw the blue light spinning. Those were the days!

There are quite a few copycat Kmart sub sandwich recipes on Pinterest and the internet, but they aren’t true to the original. In fact, all of the recipes I have found add banana peppers. Trust me, this was not a thing that Kmart put on their sub sandwiches because I would remember since I’m not a fan of banana peppers. Just to be sure I asked my 2 sisters who loved the sandwiches as much as I did if banana peppers were on the Kmart sub and they both said no!
I still wondered why ALL of the recipes included the dreaded banana peppers, so I decided to do a deep dive and research the internet.
And then I found proof:
I mean you could add banana peppers if you want to but why mess with a classic.
You will need:
Hoagie rolls
Oscar Meyer Bologna
Oscar Meyer Ham
Oscar Meyer Hard Salami
Kraft American Cheese
Yellow mustard
Thinly sliced yellow onion
Sliced tomato
Sliced dill pickles
Finely shredded iceburg lettuce
*Note – the Oscar Mayer brand ham salami may be hard to find so I substituted the Applegate Farms brand for the sliced ham and Dietz and Watson brand for the salami
Directions for Copycat Kmart Submarine Sandwiches:
Spread mustard on the top of the hoagie roll
Next cut the meats in half and the cheese in half diagonally
Slice the tomatoes, lettuce and slice the onion as thin as possible.
Place ham on the bottom bun
Then place the bologna on top of the ham. It may be hard to find the Oscar Mayer ham so I used the Applegate Farms ham slices
Next place the salami on top of the bologna
Now place the cheese on top of the salami. The Oscar Mayer hard salami can be hard to find too, so I substituted the Dietz and Watson brand.
Place the sliced tomatoes on top of the cheese
Next place onions on top of the tomatoes
Now place the dill pickles on top of the onions
Then place some shredded lettuce on top of the pickles
Finally place the bun on top
Wrap tight with cling plastic wrap and place on counter or refrigerator for 30 minutes for all of the flavors to combine.
This copycat Kmart Submarine Sandwich is a trip down memory lane for me. My sisters and I still talk about these and how much of a treat it was to come home with them. My dad absolutely loved these and I think my mom loved them as well because she didn’t have to cook! It was one of my best childhood memories.
I can’t wait to bring a bunch of these to our next family reunion! They are great for picnics, 4th of July or anytime! Your family will love them. Do you remember having one of these as a kid?
