I have come up with the Best Fried Green Tomatoes recipe! When my son was living in Savannah, I had my first fried green tomato on top of a burger with pimento cheese and I fell in love. I immedately ordered a side of fried green tomatoes and to replicated the recipe here at home! Try them with my horseradish sauce, you’ll love them too!
Now I know there are a lot of fried green tomatoes recipes that use cornmeal, but I just don’t like the gritty texture, it feels like I’m eating sand. So when I came across fried green tomatoes that were crispy and light, I had to make them for myself!

Directions for the Best Fried Green Tomatoes
I actually grew my own tomatoes just for this recipe. I like the Celebrity variety, but you could also use Early Girl.
Slice tomatoes into 1/2″ slices, and discar the ends
Sprinkle sliced tomatoes with table salt and let sit on paper towels for about 15 minutes and pat dry.
Pour the buttermilk into a shallow bowl and mix the dry ingredients in another shallow bowl.
Next dip the tomato slices in buttermilk and then coat in the dry ingredients.
Fry the coated slices in canola oil over medium high heat until golden brown and then flip and fry until the other side is crispy and golden brown. Fry 4 or 5 slices at a time, don’t overcrowd the pan.
Place on wire rack to drain. Serve hot with my creamy horseradish sauce.
For the horseradish sauce:
Mix the sour cream, mayonnaise, ground mustard, paprika, Dijon mustard, creamy horseradish together in a bowl. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste, top with chives
These go great inside a burger with pimento cheese too!
