Mom’s best apple pie recipe is truly the best. The crust is flaky, the apples are tender with a little crunch and no one made a better apple pie than my mom. In fact, my oldest son would request this apple pie on the first day of school so he knew it would be home waiting for him as his first after school snack of the school year. From Kindergarten to his senior year in High School he would look forward to this comforting hug baked in an apple pie.

You will need:
For pie crust:
3/4 cup shortening
2 cups flour
1/4 tsp salt
1/3 cup milk
Small heart cookie cutter
For pie filling:
6 Granny Smith apples
3/4 cup sugar
3 Tb butter
3 Tb flour
1 tsp cinnamon
Directions for Mom’s Best Apple Pie:
Combine the shortening and milk. Mix in the flour and salt thoroughly to combine.
Divide dough into two equal balls. Roll one ball with a rolling pin on a floured surface to about 1/8-inch thickness.
Place into a 9-inch (deep dish) pie plate, pressing any air bubbles out and overlap the edge of the plate.
Peel, slice and core the apples. Mix the sugar, flour, and cinnamon together in a bowl. Coat the apples in the cinnamon-sugar mixture and put the apples into the pie crust.
Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon-sugar mixture over the apples in the pie pan. Cut up the 3 Tb of butter and put over the apples.
Roll out the other ball of dough to 1/8-inch thickness and place on top of the pie pan. Trim off excess crust and crimp edges.
Roll out the excess crust and cut out heart shapes with the cookie cutter. Place the heart shapes on top of the pie in a pretty pattern and make slits in the top crust with a knife.
Bake for 45 minutes at 400 degrees. Cover the edge of crust with foil and remove the foil the last 20 minutes of baking.
This is seriously the best apple pie! Top with ice cream, whipped cream or a sharp cheddar cheese (my Dad’s favorite was the cheddar cheese)!
